>>> LATENT ENTITY (Body without Narrator) is an experimental participatory art project that brings a digital lifeform to life – powered by the sleep of people worldwide. It explores how the unconscious bodily activity during sleep can influence the behavior and development of a collective digital character inside a game engine. The character acts as an autonomous digital being shaped and controled by sleep, exploring the symbiosis of human and technology in contemporary capitalist sleep systems.

REQUIREMENTS
You only need a few basics to participate:
1. An Android phone
Currently, only Android is supported.
2. Install a provided sleep-tracking app
You’ll receive access to an app that collects and transmits your sleep data.
Installation and setup support is provided.
3. (Optional) A sleep-tracking wearable
If you already own a fitness tracker or smartwatch, it can likely be paired with the app for more accurate data.
If you don’t have one, a wearable may be provided depending on future project funding.
CREATE & CULTIVATE YOUR SEED
The digital character is a growing cluster of many small user entities, so called Sleep Seeds.
You can choose an anonymous <alias> for your personal Seed. This name will appear in the cluster, representing your presence, while keeping your identity and data fully anonymous.
To cultivate your Seed, no active work is needed. Just:
→ Wear your tracker while you sleep
→ Keep your phone powered on overnight
Your nightly sleep phases will fuel the growth of your personal seed and influence the evolving digital cluster organism.
BENEFITS & COMPENSATION
By joining the Latent Entity – Body without Narrator® network, you become part of an experimental, community-driven digital ecosystem that operates entirely during sleep.
As a Cultivator, you may:
– Receive sponsored sleep products from project partners
– Access financial or symbolic (e.g. in-game) compensation for participation
– Become part of future exhibitions and activations of the entity
>> Passive income? Make money while you sleep
Register here, create your Sleep Seed, and you’ll be contacted when Latent Entity reactivates – with instructions on how to connect and cultivate your Seed.
Join the Cluster ᶻ𝗓 𐰁 >> Register, create your personal Sleep Seed and become a future Cultivator.

UPON JOINING
You’ll begin with a personal sleep seed, generated during your first connected sleep after registration.
This seed is linked to your body’s rhythms: growing, shifting, and mutating in response to your individual sleep phases. Over time, it develops into a character shaped entirely by the unconscious patterns of your rest.
Your digital being will only be active while you sleep, disappearing once you wake.
A COLLECTIVE CLUSTER
Latent Entity is a dynamic cluster of all participant/cultivator characters—interacting, clustering, and evolving together. Each individual character contributes to the collective, shaping and transforming the behavior of this shared sleep organism.
>>> Latent Entity is not a fixed structure. It is a shifting digital organism, parasitically adapting its presence and system in an attempt to self-sustain.
Depending on the context, it may
… unfold as a live installation within a physical exhibition
… appear as a streaming presence on digital platforms
… evolve inside a companion mobile app
… or take on entirely new forms and behaviours.
Its manifestation is always temporary, responsive, and shaped by the individual and collective sleep activity of its global Cultivators.
At the exhibition Body without Narrator in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, the digital character became active inside the transparent architectural structure of saasfee*pavillon. Here, the digital project extended into the physical world through several key elements:

SLEEP KITS (Starter Inventories)
Limited-edition Sleep Kits were distributed to first-time Cultivators joining from different time zones and locations such as Australia, Chile, Germany, Finland, France, Hong Kong, India, Kazakhstan, Macau, and South Korea.
These personalized starter packages contained everything needed to enter the system and connect to your individual sleep seed — your digital presence cultivated during sleep.
The kits served as the entry point into the planetary sleep network and could be activated both from home and on-site.
SLEEP STATION (Console)
A Sleep Station was installed, a console-like unit equipped with integrated sleep cabins and a live projection surface. This allowed on-site sleepers to join the system directly, alongside remote participants from around the world.
To support this, four individual Users were created, which could be embodied by visitors resting inside the Sleep Station:
<zzz0ff> (Cultivator #1),
<pillow_ceo> (Cultivator #2),
<nap_alone> (Cultivator #3),
<kozytown> (Cultivator #4)
CULTIVATOR OUTFITS (Sleep Gear)
Custom-made Sleep Outfits were created for the installation: hooded blanket suits with integrated sleep masks, drawing on the aesthetics of sportswear, video game skins, and DIY cosplay.
Each outfit anonymized the sleeper, displayed their sleep seed/Cultivator name, and featured logos from sponsors and partners who supported the project, financially or through sleep-related products, sustaining and shaping the Cultivators’ participation/sleep.
The outfits were expanded with Parasitic Patches: silk-textile labels featuring text fragments, poems, or statements by various authors. Attached through buttonholes, these patches turned each outfit into a kind of narrative forum.

AN ECOSYSTEM OF SLEEP
Individual sleep—and thus the structure and behavior of „Latent Entity“—emerges each day as the result of negotiations within a complex network of human and non-human actors. It is a delicate, relational phenomenon that arises anew each day from the interactions, relationships, negotiations, and conflicts among countless actors and their interdependencies, shaped by a multitude of shifting physical, material, economic, narrative, and socio-cultural structures.
>> Who are the cultivators, sustainers, regulators of our sleep? In history and today?
COMPANION PUBLICATION (2023)
The publication documents the prototyping of the digital organism, situates it within a multidimensional narrative that spans historical and contemporary sleep structures, and speculatively extends it—both systemically and materially—within the context of Michel Serres‘ transformative-parasitic framework.
An artistic, interdisciplinary research project in single-bed format (22 x 9 cm), published in 2023. Softcover with relief varnish, Swiss binding, 224 pages.
You can participate as a sponsor or long-term partner of the Latent Entity Network through financial contributions or by providing materials that actively shape the conditions of the digital organism and its human interface.
EXAMPLES
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Your contribution helps cover performer fees, production costs, and the technical infrastructure necessary to maintain the system.
TEXTILES
Functional or conceptually aligned textile materials for the handmade performer outfits, supporting both aesthetics and use during sleep.
SLEEP-AID PRODUCTS
Products for sleep optimization that can be offered to performers and thus contribute to improving their individual sleep and therefore the activity of the digital entity.
>> The Cultivator Gear: A Unique Branding Opportunity
A key element of the physical system around Latent Entity is the Cultivaor Gear, specially designed clothing for the sleeping participants, created in collaboration with designer >Kathrin Baumgartner. These custom-sewn textiles, inspired by “hooded blankets”, will be expanded with brand logos from sleep-aid market players who contribute to and shape human sleep worldwide. Similar to professional sports attire, the outfits are designed to optimize the targeted activity–here: sleep–and give visual prominence to their supporters.
